Miracles of the Qur'an: The Secret of Iron

Iron, an Element Highlighted in the Qur'an

Iron is one of the elements to which the Qur'an pays special attention. An entire surah is even named after it: "Hadid" , which means "iron" .

In verse 25 of Surah Al-Hadid , Allah says:

"And We have sent down iron, wherein is mighty power and benefits for mankind..." (Surat al-Hadid, 57:25)

The word "Anzalnā" (أَنزَلْنَا) used in this verse means "We have sent down" . However, according to our earthly knowledge, iron is extracted from the ground , not "sent down". One might therefore have expected a formulation like "We brought out the iron" .

However, this phrase "We have sent down" actually reveals a scientific miracle . It refers to a truth that modern science has confirmed: iron did not form on Earth, but came from massive stellar cores and was then transported to our planet through meteorites.

This verse thus highlights a cosmic reality unknown at the time, emphasizing the celestial origin of iron and the divine wisdom behind each revelation of the Qur'an.

For iron to form, an extremely high temperature is required. However, this temperature does not exist on Earth or even on the Sun.

The Sun has a surface temperature of about 6000 degrees Celsius and a core temperature of up to 15 million degrees Celsius . However, these temperatures are not sufficient for the formation of iron .

Iron can only form in stars much larger than the Sun , where temperatures reach several hundred million degrees . When a massive star reaches a certain threshold of iron production, it can no longer support its own weight and explodes in a nova or supernova .

It is precisely through these explosions that iron is thrown into space , dispersing throughout the universe.

All astronomical discoveries confirm that the iron present on Earth comes from these gigantic stars in deep space , thus validating the scientific reality highlighted by the Qur'an more than 1400 years ago.

Not only the iron on Earth , but also that of the entire Solar System comes from space.

As mentioned earlier, the temperature of the Sun is insufficient to allow the formation of the element iron.

All this clearly demonstrates that iron was not formed on Earth , but was transported by supernovae , in accordance with what is mentioned in the verse:

"We have sent down iron..." (Surah Al-Hadid, 57:25) .

It was impossible for this information to have been known at the time the Qur'an was revealed, 1400 years ago .

If it could not have been known at that time, then how can we explain its presence in the Qur'an?

Is there any other explanation than this: the Qur'an is the Word of Allah?

Furthermore, the verse mentions that iron brings many benefits to humans . Yet, at the time of revelation, people only used iron to make swords and were unaware of its other uses. Despite this, the Qur'an states:

"…and in iron are many blessings for mankind." (Surah Al-Hadid, 57:25)

Today, thanks to scientific advances, we discover that without the iron atom, carbon-based life in the universe would be impossible .

In other words, without supernovae , several essential phenomena would never have taken place :

• The Earth could not have warmed in its early days.
• There would be no atmosphere or hydrosphere.
• No protective magnetic field would have formed.
• The Van Allen radiation belts do not exist.
• There would be no ozone layer to protect life.
• No metal would be available to form hemoglobin in human blood.
• No metal could stabilize the reactivity of oxygen , thus preventing oxidation and any oxygen-based metabolism .

The crucial importance of the iron atom is therefore evident from these explanations.

Thus, the fact that the Qur'an places particular emphasis on iron and states:

"...and in iron are many blessings for mankind." (Surah Al-Hadid, 57:25) is extremely significant and testifies to infinite divine wisdom .

Besides all this, this verse contains another secret .

This secret is as follows: The verse that speaks of iron in the Qur'an is found in Surah Al-Hadid, verse 25. This verse hides two astonishing mathematical codes .

Explanation :

• Surah Al-Hadid is the 57th surah of the Qur'an.
• In Arabic, if we write "El-Hadid" (with the definite article) and calculate its numerical value (abjad) , we get 57. This number corresponds exactly to the number of the surah in the Qur'an.
• If we remove the definite article and simply take "Hadid" , its numerical value is 26 .
• Now, 26 is the atomic number of iron in the periodic table of elements.

In other words:

• "El-Hadid" = 57 → Corresponds to the number of the surah in the Qur'an.
• "Hadid" = 26 → Corresponds to the atomic number of iron.

This perfect harmony between the revealed text and modern scientific data can only be a sign of divine wisdom .

Now let us reflect with justice and lucidity :

1400 years ago, at a time when science and technology did not even exist , how could an illiterate man living in the desert have known that iron was "descended from heaven" and that it contains many benefits ?

How could he, in writing these words in a Book, have respected these incredible numerical concordances that we have mentioned?

What rational mind can accept this?

And can we really consider someone "intelligent" who accepts such a coincidence without recognizing the obvious?

In these conditions, to affirm that the Qur'an is a human word is like closing one's eyes to the Sun which illuminates the world .

But he who closes his eyes plunges only himself into darkness ...
